We asked Jörg Hempelmann, the head of BlueCow, at the start of the ÖFT season what work is currently on the agenda.
How many BlueCow colleagues are involved in managing the demonstration plots?
There are currently four of us involved in managing the demonstration plots. We are especially pleased that our youngest employee has just successfully completed his training as a farmer!
The areas have been surveyed. What work do you have planned for the next few days?
The field was cleared of stones and cultivated before we took it over. We’ve already drilled the first test plot with a mixture of mustard and red clover. Next, we’ll take the machinery to the Bauckhof and harrow the field with a mesh harrow to control weeds. After that, we’ll measure out the plots for winter rapeseed and the grass mixtures and drill them.
The first rainfall this week is doing little to alleviate the drought in large parts of Germany. Does this also affect the Amelinghausen site? What measures are you taking to address this?
Good soil contact and solid reconsolidation are important to us. We currently still have sufficient soil moisture in the top five centimeters, and precipitation is forecast for this week. Should the rain continue to hold off, we have the option of irrigating the field using a deep well—though that isn’t necessary at the moment.
