Öko-Feldtage 2025: A look into the future of sustainable agriculture
The Öko-Feldtage 2025 at Wassergut Canitz in Saxony presented innovative solutions for the pressing challenges facing agriculture as a whole, both in the field and in the barn. On June 18 and 19, over 9,000 visitors took the opportunity to find out all about the latest developments in organic crop production and animal husbandry. In addition to the focus topic of “water management”, the focus was on the lively exchange between young and old, organic and conventional farmers and between practice and research – a real forum for inspiration and cooperation.
Around 300 program items offered a wide range of insights: from climate-adapted crop rotations, robust varieties and new crops to forest grazing, composting, resource-saving irrigation and innovative equipment for soil cultivation – such as new harrows, cultivators or autonomous machines for weed management. Organic farmers, those who want to become organic farmers and all colleagues who are interested in environmentally friendly, sustainable methods received valuable suggestions for their daily work.
Focus on water
“These Öko-Feldtage have once again made it clear to many farmers that the issue of water management has become a central challenge in all areas of primary agricultural production. Politicians have received indications, almost a clear mandate, as to why preventive water protection should be rewarded. On the other hand, practical water management strategies must be developed actively and promptly, especially for the land use systems in Germany, and a framework must be created for this. The Canitz water estate and FiBL Germany focused on water at the Öko-Feldtage, a topic that concerns us all. We at Wassergut Canitz are grateful that we were able to explain our groundwater-conserving farming methods to so many visitors, as well as to politicians and businesses,” says Dr. Bernhard Wagner, Managing Director of Wassergut Canitz GmbH.
Future visions and research needs addressed to the BMLEH
Vera Bruder, Managing Director of the organizer FiBL Projekte GmbH, draws a positive conclusion of the Öko-Feldtage: “Together with our partners, we were able to provide a lot of impetus for the further development of organic agriculture with the Öko-Feldtage. 362 exhibitors – we did not expect that, especially in a phase in which the number of converters is not increasing as hoped. At the same time, a quarter of our visitors farm conventionally. That shows how open the exchange is. The combination of the young generation’s vision of the future and the innovative spirit of the industry was particularly impressive. The Organic Future Camp and the Kompetenzteam Forschung Ökologische Land- und Lebensmittelwirtschaft (KT FÖLL) used the Öko-Feldtage to address research needs and visions for the future directly to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Home Affairs (BMLEH). The enthusiasm and creativity of the people who shape organic farming are a great source of inspiration for me and the team. The Öko-Feldtage are not only a practical showcase, but also a political platform with charisma.”
At the Öko-Feldtage, Saxony’s Minister of Agriculture Georg-Ludwig von Breitenbuch handed over the baton to his colleague from Lower Saxony, Miriam Staudte. The Öko-Feldtage 2027 will take place on 16. and June 17, 2027 at the Bauckhof Amelinghausen in Lower Saxony.
