The \u00d6ko-Feldtage are taking place for the first time in central Germany, in the federal state of Saxony. The Minister of State Georg-Ludwig von Breitenbuch will open the \u00d6ko-Feldtage at the Canitz water estate on June 18 and take part in other program items on the first day of the event. Why did the state of Saxony bring the \u00d6ko-Feldtage to their state and what does the Saxon state presentation offer? In our “Four questions for…” section, we spoke to the Minister of Agriculture. <\/em><\/p>\n

1. what are the strengths of Saxon agriculture and organic farming in particular?<\/h3>\n

From Breitenbuch: Saxony is home to well-trained farm managers who make excellent use of the natural site conditions and produce valuable food. The structure of Saxony’s farms, both organic and conventional, is diverse. The average farm size is 150 hectares of agricultural land. The range extends from large, efficient farms, including those in the organic sector, which produce high-quality goods for the market, to smaller farms with on-farm processing that produce directly for consumers. Organic farms in Saxony stand for innovation, for example by expanding the cultivation of organic soy or organic field vegetables. <\/p>\n

2. why are the \u00d6ko-Feldtage 2025 taking place in Saxony and what does this mean for Saxony’s agriculture?<\/h3>\n

Organic farming is an important part of Saxony’s agricultural sector. Thanks to its diverse and innovative production as well as its regional roots, the entire organic sector in Saxony has been growing steadily and in line with the market for decades – from primary production to processing. There is therefore a vital organic sector in Saxony and the whole of eastern Germany. That’s why the \u00d6ko-Feldtage are the most important and largest event for organic farming in Saxony. <\/p>\n

At Wassergut Canitz, innovations will be presented, research results discussed and machines tested in action on over 30 hectares of event grounds. During the \u00d6ko-Feldtage, farmers can learn about organic farming methods and find out about climate adaptation strategies. The \u00d6ko-Feldtage are also recognized and appreciated in the field of vocational training. Numerous vocational and technical school classes have already registered for guided tours or one of the many training courses on offer. The \u00d6ko-Feldtage in Saxony help agricultural businesses to network, practitioners, experts and advisors from the profession to talk to each other and be inspired. I hope that agriculture will move closer together and that organic and conventional farming methods will once again increasingly see themselves as part of a whole. <\/p>\n

3. organic farming has always focused on the entire path of food from the field to the plate. To what extent does the Saxon State Ministry for the Environment and Agriculture also showcase its support services for regional value chains in this area at the \u00d6ko-Feldtage? <\/h3>\n

Of course, processing and marketing as well as regional value creation are topics that are of great importance to the Saxon State Ministry for the Environment and Agriculture – even in the form of a separate specialist department. The processing of agricultural products on site contributes to value creation and maintains jobs in the Free State of Saxony. This is in the interests of our agricultural businesses, but also in the interests of Saxony’s food industry. <\/p>\n

To illustrate this, we show an example of the path of local pulses from the field to the food product on the Saxon state website. This path of local and regionally produced food from seed to finished product is just one example and is symbolic of the diversity in Saxony’s fields and value creation as a whole. However, various networking platforms are also represented and use very practical examples to demonstrate the added value of regional value chains, which are not only a locational advantage, but also an issue of supply security in turbulent times. At the \u00d6ko-Feldtage, visitors can choose from a consistently regional range of dishes, which once again illustrates this – as innovative products or in traditional recipes. <\/p>\n

4 You are a farmer yourself, Mr. von Breitenbuch. Which of the exhibition topics at the \u00d6ko-Feldtage are of particular interest to you personally? What would you recommend to visitors? <\/h3>\n

The \u00d6ko-Feldtage offer a wide range of different topics relating to sustainable agriculture, so it is difficult to make a recommendation. As Minister of Agriculture, I would like to see a strengthening of animal husbandry in Saxony, so I am pleased that many exhibitors are showing interesting innovations in this field, such as modern technology in the field of livestock farming. At the \u00d6ko-Feldtage, for example, we can see how innovative concepts can be combined with animal-friendly husbandry – such as extensive forest grazing using the example of the Canitz water estate. The results of this pilot project show that such pasture use can have positive effects from an animal and nature perspective. <\/p>\n

Another exciting example is the composting barn with spelt husk as bedding. This method combines comfort and hygiene for the animals with high-quality composting of the manure and the utilization of secondary raw materials from the processing of grain. <\/p>\n

The state presentation of the Free State of Saxony focuses on the currently most relevant mobile slaughter systems for the important application directly on the farms. We still need to make various adjustments here in order to be able to use these systems successfully. But of course I am also interested in the innovative possibilities of irrigation in plant cultivation with the corresponding demonstrations. <\/p>\n

However, it is also interesting for farmers from Saxony to learn how they can benefit from direct cooperation with the authorities of the Free State. As Minister of State, I am particularly committed to being close to the people and reducing bureaucracy. In the area of organic farming, examples include the organic partner farms and the Planting Green practice network. In addition to networking among practitioners, the \u00d6ko-Feldtage also offer the opportunity to prepare successful investments and do business with the many suppliers of technology and inputs. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
