As a comparison: &#8220;The best prevention of game damage is when the land manager and the person authorized to hunt are one and the same person!&#8221; What I want to say is that successful preventive water protection can always be achieved &#8211; but there are a few basic requirements. Communication and cooperation between land management and water supply companies should take place on an equal footing. This is the first reason why it often does not work in other places. Another point is the fact that, unfortunately, the requirements of the EU Nitrates Directive with instruments such as the Fertilizer Ordinance still do not lead to the desired goal in many regions. At this point, only agriculture can help by becoming an environmental service provider for the respective water supplier or the respective water catchment area.      <\/p>\n<h3>What specific measures have enabled you to continuously reduce nitrate levels?<\/h3>\n<p><em>Bernhard Wagner:<\/em> The Leipziger Wasserwerke, with us as a subsidiary, opted for the instrument of &#8220;organic farming as land management for preventive groundwater protection&#8221; back in 1990. Water protection-oriented organic farming now accounts for around ten percent of the agricultural land in the water protection areas of the waterworks. We are continuously developing this further through our own scientific studies (cultivation trials, suction plate systems, targeted R&amp;D projects, etc.). Overall, the proportion of ecological land management is around 14 percent.   <\/p>\n<p>The conversion of our land to organic farming alone had already brought about a significant, noticeable reduction in nitrate levels by 2002. In order to further strengthen this trend, environmental service contracts were concluded with almost all land managers in the drinking water protection areas of Leipziger Wasserwerke from 2002 onwards. The contracts are based on well-founded statements on maximum tolerable N balances, which are available for almost all agricultural land in the water protection areas. If the tolerable target N balance is met or not reached, each agricultural land manager is paid for this environmental service in accordance with a contractual agreement with Leipziger Wasserwerke. The form of cultivation does not matter &#8211; the decisive factor is the achievement of the environmental indicator.    <\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, we have achieved an average nitrate concentration of less than 15 mg\/l in the raw mixed water that is regularly analyzed at the Canitz-Thallwitz site (drinking water protection area). In this context, the drinking water protection instrument &#8220;water protection-oriented organic farming&#8221; is ahead of all other forms of farming, as the issue of pesticide residues simply does not play a role in the organic farming we practice. <\/p>\n<h3>The water estate is located in the Central German arid region. What are your strategies with ever decreasing summer precipitation? <\/h3>\n<p><em>Bernhard Wagner: <\/em> At our location, we have missed almost two complete years of precipitation in total over the last ten years. Even 2024, which &#8220;felt&#8221; rainier, did not reach the long-term average. <\/p>\n<p>The climatic changes are noticeable and can also be proven by figures. We are facing considerable challenges, particularly in the so-called Central German arid region, the Leipzig lowland bay. Due to the low rainfall and the resulting significantly lower potential seepage water rates, we can only afford significantly lower nitrogen loads than in areas of Germany with more rainfall. We had to adapt to the climatic and geohydrological site conditions at an early stage.   <\/p>\n<p>For these reasons, we are looking at cultivation systems that have a high water use efficiency, i.e. require less water overall and therefore contribute to stable groundwater recharge. At the same time, these cultivation systems have a high nitrogen efficiency and a lower nitrate discharge potential. As higher yields also require more water, organic farming with its often lower yields, which are often interpreted negatively, could offer new potential.  <\/p>\n<h3>Why did you want to be the venue for the \u00d6ko-Feldtage 2025?<\/h3>\n<p><em>Bernhard Wagner:<\/em> After we heard about the invitation to tender to host the nationwide \u00d6ko-Feldtage 2025, we submitted our application in consultation with our shareholder, Leipziger Wasserwerke. As we consider the topic of &#8220;water protection&#8221; to be extremely important, our aim was to focus more on organic farming in connection with active water protection.
